Sinus Lift & Bone Grafting

Sinus Lift & Bone Grafting For many patients who have lost teeth in the upper back jaw, the placement of dental implants is complicated by two anatomical issues: a lack of sufficient bone volume and the proximity of the maxillary sinus cavity. Our Sinus Lift and Bone Grafting service is a highly specialized pre-implant surgical procedure designed to address this problem. It effectively creates the necessary height and density of bone required to securely anchor dental implants, transforming a previously non-treatable area into a stable foundation for restoration. A sinus lift (or sinus augmentation) gently elevates the floor of the sinus cavity, and the space created is filled with bone grafting material. This material, over a period of healing, integrates with the existing bone to form a solid, long-lasting bed for the implants. This crucial procedure is the key to expanding candidacy for implant therapy, ensuring a successful, predictable outcome in the posterior maxilla. Why Bone Grafting is Necessary Bone loss in the upper jaw is common following tooth loss, as the bone is no longer stimulated by a tooth root. This bone naturally resorbs (shrinks) over time. Additionally, the maxillary sinus expands downward toward the empty space. When the remaining bone height is less than 5-8mm, placing an implant carries a high risk of penetrating the sinus cavity, leading to failure. The sinus lift procedure overcomes this challenge: Restoring Vertical Bone: It adds the necessary height to the jawbone, protecting the final implant from instability and failure. Preventing Sinus Perforation: By gently moving the sinus membrane upward, it creates a safe zone for the implant placement. Anchoring Point: The augmented bone provides a strong, biological anchor for the implant to achieve osseointegration (fusion with the bone). Facial Support: By rebuilding the bony ridge, the procedure also helps maintain the natural contour and support of the cheek and lip. Types of Grafting and Surgical Approach We utilize different techniques and materials based on the amount of bone needed: Lateral Window Sinus Lift (Major Augmentation): Used for severe bone deficiency. A small opening is created in the side of the jawbone, the sinus membrane is lifted, and a large volume of graft material is placed. Crestal/Osteotome Technique (Minor Augmentation): Used when only a few millimeters of bone are needed. The lift is performed gently through the socket where the implant will be placed, often allowing the graft and implant placement to occur in the same appointment. Grafting Materials: We use high-quality, biocompatible bone substitutes (e.g., allograft, xenograft, or synthetic), which act as a scaffold to encourage your body to grow new, natural bone. Healing and Success Protocol Bone grafting procedures require a dedicated healing period, typically ranging from 6 to 9 months, depending on the extent of the lift. During this time, the graft material is replaced by your own mature, healthy bone. We monitor this healing phase closely with periodic X-rays. This patient-focused patience is non-negotiable, as it guarantees the dense, vascularized bone foundation necessary for the ultimate success and lifelong stability of your dental implants.
