Advanced Periodontal Therapy

Advanced Periodontal Therapy When gingivitis is left untreated, it progresses into Periodontitis, a chronic and serious inflammatory disease that leads to the irreversible destruction of the bone and ligaments supporting the teeth. Our Advanced Periodontal Therapy service is a specialized, multi-stage treatment designed to stop this destructive process, eliminate deep-seated infection, stabilize the foundation of your teeth, and preserve your natural smile. This therapy is essential for patients diagnosed with moderate to severe gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. This treatment goes far beyond a simple cleaning. It involves deep, non-surgical and sometimes surgical interventions aimed at removing calcified deposits (tartar/calculus) and bacterial toxins from the deepest recesses of the gum pockets, allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach firmly to the root surface. Understanding the Threat of Periodontitis Periodontitis is a silent disease that progresses without significant pain until it reaches advanced stages. Key indicators and risks include: Deep Pockets: The hallmark sign is the deepening of the gum pockets (over 4mm) as the bone and supporting tissues pull away from the tooth roots. Bone Loss: The immune response to the chronic infection causes the surrounding jawbone to erode, weakening the support structure. Tooth Mobility: As bone support decreases, teeth may become loose, shift positions, or even fall out. Systemic Health Link: Research links periodontal inflammation to increased risk or severity of systemic conditions, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The Non-Surgical Cornerstone: Scaling and Root Planing The initial and most critical phase of advanced therapy is the deep-cleaning procedure known as Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), often called "deep cleaning": Local Anesthesia: The area is completely numbed to ensure patient comfort throughout the deep cleaning. Scaling: Specialized instruments (both manual and ultrasonic) are used to meticulously remove all plaque and hard calculus deposits from the tooth surface and deep within the infected gum pockets. Root Planing: The root surface is smoothed (planed) to remove bacterial toxins and create a clean, smooth surface that encourages the healing and reattachment of the gum tissue. Antimicrobial Agents: In many cases, localized antibiotic gels or chips are placed directly into the deepest pockets after SRP to eliminate remaining bacteria and promote pocket shrinkage. Surgical and Maintenance Phases Following SRP, we enter a critical re-evaluation and maintenance phase: Re-evaluation: Typically 4-6 weeks after SRP, we re-measure the pockets to assess healing. If deep pockets persist, the periodontist may recommend Periodontal Surgery (e.g., flap surgery) to gain direct access to deep bony defects for thorough cleaning and regeneration. Long-Term Periodontal Maintenance: Patients who have undergone advanced therapy require specialized, frequent cleanings (often every 3 months) to prevent the disease from recurring. This lifelong partnership is essential for stabilizing the tissues and protecting your bone support, giving your natural teeth the best chance for survival.
