Interceptive Orthodontics for Children
Interceptive orthodontics, often called "Phase 1" treatment, focuses on guiding jaw growth while a child is still developing (usually ages 7-10). The goal is to treat structural problems early to prevent them from becoming severe skeletal issues later. This might involve using palatal expanders to widen a narrow upper jaw or appliances to correct a crossbite or protruding teeth. By intervening early, we can create room for erupting permanent teeth and guide the jaws into better alignment. This proactive approach often eliminates the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery in the future. It also simplifies and shortens the time required for braces ("Phase 2") when the child hits their teenage years.
